About this project
As part of the Airport Extension Programme undertaken at Frankfurt International Airport, a new 2,800m long landing runway with a parallel taxiway system designed to be used by aircraft up to code E, was built to the northwest of the existing airport.
NACO was awarded the contract, as a member of the Joint Venture with our German partners, to complete the detailed design, tender documents and supervision for the construction of the new runway, its taxiway system, related civil works and mechanical and electrical installations.
In order to connect the new fourth runway with the existing airport infrastructure two taxiways had to be built crossing over the highway and the high speed rail track. The structural design of these bridges was done by a third party and used the taxiway geometrical design prepared by NACO.
Our design work consisted of a number of disciplines including: 3D terrain planning, geometrical design, pavement markings, pavement structural design and civil works for airfield lighting. To enable the correct connection to the existing airport’s infrastructure, phasing plans were prepared in close co-operation with the client.
All of the works were completed as scheduled and the runway successfully opened to air traffic in October 2011.
