New terminal lighting at Luxembourg Airport

With a focus on improving wayfinding in Terminal A, operator lux-Airport enlisted NACO’s support to deliver an innovative lighting master plan. Not only does this support a better customer experience, it optimises the use of energy, improves safety and boosts visual comfort for passengers.

A clear roadmap to net zero

Luxembourg Airport is one of almost 100 airports that have committed to achieving net zero, absolute carbon neutrality, by 2030.

Amongst other initiatives, operator lux-Airport was looking to optimise the use of energy in terminal A and B, and identified the replacement of terminal lighting as an area which could reduce energy consumption.

Lighting also plays an important role in making passengers feel welcome and at ease. It is also key for wayfinding – helping passengers navigate their way through the airport. For employees, lighting can improve their work environment which in turn has a positive impact on their interaction with passengers.

These things combined contribute significantly to ambience within the terminal, which in turn has a huge impact on the customer experience. A study by ACI confirmed that ambience constitutes 42% of airport passenger satisfaction.

Lighting elevates the design of any terminal, creating a sense of place which in turn enhances the customer experience. We’re delighted to be supporting lux-Airport in their sustainability ambitions, as well as improve the customer experience.

Taking a phased approach

NACO delivered an innovative lighting design for lux-Airport along with an integrated lighting master plan to guide the phased replacement of conventional lighting with location-specific LED solutions.

Working in close collaboration with the airport’s operations and maintenance team, a lighting-management system was developed which complies with standards, supports the building’s architecture, and minimises energy consumption and maintenance costs. All whilst being safe, durable, versatile and supplier-agnostic, enabling flexibility for the future.

The new lighting also elevates the passenger journey and flow. It aids wayfinding and enables a safer environment, especially in high transit areas where proper visibility, comfort and reduced downtime are key.

The phased approach which NACO has designed is already bringing us huge benefits in terms of our sustainability goals. It’s also enhancing the customer experience and improving passengers’ enjoyment as they travel through the airport.

Enhancing the customer experience

Once NACO’s innovative lighting design is fully implemented in the terminals, the airport’s customer experience is enhanced from the moment the passenger arrives at the airport to the time their aircraft takes off from the newly refurbished runway.

The resulting illumination system resolves the current distracting glare from the ceiling, improving passengers’ focus on wayfinding and encouraging greater engagement with commercial offerings within the terminals.

The new LED fixtures are fitted with intelligent controls and will reduce power demand for lighting by 70%. The phased replacement has already contributed to lux-Airport winning its first star as part of its Lean & Green Label – an international programme to reduce CO2 emissions – and Terminal A becoming LEED compliant.
